Almost all the leaves have been stripped from the trees, but there are still a few hanging on and keeping their view of the world before them.
Exerting effort to avoid being trampled underfoot. But those leaves still on the tree are so dried out, sunwashed, and brittle that when they finally rest upon the ground, instead of carpeting a path, they will be crumbled into dust.
